Chalkboard Canvas Tutorial

Stavros’ birthday is six months away, but I have already been making party plans and working on the theme! I know… Crazy!!! Anyway, the party is going to have an art theme with rainbow colors! Fun, right?! Well, the theme is actually pretty common, so naturally, I need to add some flair! While brainstorming party ideas, I decided to incorporate my chalkboard obsession into the party. So, as a party favor, I am making each party guest a chalkboard canvas with a pouch to store chalk and chalkboard markers! I already made one chalkboard canvas to test it out and I am thrilled with the outcome! I love this project because it can be used over-and-over, rather than be thrown away and forgotten like most party favors! I decided to share my chalkboard canvas with you so you can make your own! JSYK: this project is surprisingly fast, easy and inexpensive!… All good things! I hope you enjoy it!

Chalkboard Canvas–Things You’ll Need

  1. Canvas–your choice of size (I used 18″x22″)
  2. Chalkboard Paint
  3. Paint Brush or Foam Roller
  4. Glue Gun and Glue Stick
  5. Fabric–your choice of pattern (I cut mine to 22″x17″)
  6. Scissors
  7. Thumb Tacks–(8-10 tacks)
  8. Iron (to smooth any wrinkles in fabric)

photo 1

Let’s Get Started!!!

First, if your canvas is not primed, it might be a good idea to prime it. (Something to keep in mind is that priming will stiffen the canvas, possibly resulting in a better writing surface.) If you are priming, allow the primer to dry. Then, apply your chalkboard paint as evenly as possible on the surface and sides of the canvas. You will use more paint with a roller, but your result will likely be more even with this technique. (Personally, however, I am fond of a paint brush.) Be sure to allow ample time for your chalkboard paint to dry on the canvas–overnight is a good option for drying time!

Sidenote:

  • It is important to always prep a chalkboard before using it. To prep your chalkboard canvas: simply take a piece of chalk, lay it on its side and cover the entire surface with chalk. When done, wipe clean. Doing this to any chalkboard prevents permanent ghost marks from being left behind. Doing this periodically (after washing with a damp cloth) doesn’t hurt!
  • If you’re interested, making your own chalkboard paint is surprisingly easy!… Simply add one cup of latex-based flat finish paint (ANY COLOR) to two tablespoons of unsanded tile grout. Easy! (This amount of DIY chalkboard paint should cover about a 4′x4′ area.)

Now you’re ready to apply your artist’s pouch! Place your pre-cut fabric to your desired location–make sure it’s straight and your desired size. Also, be sure to cut your fabric slightly wider than the width of your canvas so you can wrap the fabric on the sides and bottom. The pattern on the fabric should be facing the canvas (you’ll want to iron out any wrinkles first). Fold about a 2″ flap at the top and bottom, facing you. Add a strip of hot glue to the width of the canvas, where you want the top of the pouch to be, and firmly press your fabric to the canvas.

photo 5

Next, fold your remaining fabric up to meet the affixed fabric, leaving about a 1″ difference in height.

Turn your canvas over. Fold the sides and corners as if wrapping a present and use your glue gun to secure your fabric to the canvas. I added thumb tacks as an added way to secure the fabric. I used a few on the back, along the wood frame, and I also applied one on each side of the pouch on the front of the canvas.

That’s it! You’re done. Now, feel free to add ribbon on the side of your canvas or along the pouch if you’d like! I added a chalkboard label (which I made myself) with my son’s name and pom poms! More ideas to add some excitement to your canvas (as if any is needed), could be buttons, flowers, stickers or even vinyl decals…. Go crazy!

Crafty Weekend

This post may seem a little jaded, but it’s simply part of living abroad we have to deal with. We get endless stares and are the focus of unwanted photos when we are in public. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it certainly gets old fast! We thought the attention we received in Brazil was extreme, but we had no idea what we were in for here in China!

Literally, people set up their tripods and their telescopic lenses when they see us coming. While playing catch at the park, onlookers get so caught up in staring they don’t leave us enough space to throw the ball. Also, it is not uncommon for us to have a family dinner at a restaurant and be surrounded by a handful of gawkers!… Really, while we’re eating?! We try to be understanding of the fact that we simply look different to the locals, but it can be a bit much at times. Stavros and Tammer handle the attention better than I do; but this weekend, even Tammer had enough! We felt a nice weekend at home would be a fantastic resolution to the problem.

I had a couple of things in mind that I have wanted us to do for a while, so we did some crafty projects while staying inside. First, we made a lion handimal family. Tammer makes fun of it (he thinks the mommy lion looks like a bear), but I think it turned out lovely! We also made our family handprint and thumbprint on a canvas. Tammer had the idea to do “yellow and blue make green”, which I thought was brilliant! The canvases are far from perfect, but they were definitely fun to make!

Earth Day 2013

Earth Day is on Monday, so Stavros and I decided to make a handprint earth canvas to celebrate! We went to the craft store today and bought everything we needed! I was even lucky enough to get a round canvas–I was initially thinking I would have to draw a circle on a rectangle canvas for the shape of the earth.

We came home from the craft store and I was shocked at how excited Stav was about his new project! He started painting right away and his enthusiasm made me more excited to do the project with him. Stavros is really pretty good with a paint brush and handprint art is his favorite, so I knew the final product would be great! Its finished now! I just love it and I am trying to figure out more Earth Day projects to do with him over the next few days! Happy Earth Day, everyone!

Hong Kong 2013

We had quite an eventful trip! Our plane was struck by lightning, our flights were delayed/hovering the city due to rain, and it rained off and on for our entire trip! We had a great time though! We enjoyed Disneyland on Easter Sunday and the Easter bunny did not forget to visit Stavros in Hong Kong! The Easter bunny is impressive!

On our trip, we took a tram to Victoria Peak for some gorgeous views and we walked the Avenue of the Stars! We took a bus tour to a fishing village, which is a water town–from there we caught a boat ride to explore the village. We are amazed by the primitive ways of the locals, who weren’t too fond of the tourists. We went on an amazing 30 minute glass bottom aerial cable car ride through the mountains for one of our excursions! This was my favorite part of the trip! The ride  is much longer than the other cable car rides we have been on and the glass bottom adds impressive views. We also went to the Giant Buddha as part of a tour! The weather quickly set in and hid the Giant Buddha immediately after we saw it, so we were grateful we didn’t miss our opportunity!

We joked with Jovan that while vacationing with us, he went on: a plane, train, tram, cable car, boat, bus and taxi… Pretty much, the only things we missed were helicopter rides and submarines! Spring Photo Shoot

I have been anxious for us to have a sunny day to take some outdoor spring pictures of Stavros and today has been perfect! I took advantage of the sun and got a few shots of Stavros with his Asian parasol! The idea occurred to me to do this last month while gathering ideas for the Easter egg hunt. While the parasols didn’t go over so well with the kids at the party, Stavros has been thrilled with them and plays with them daily since they were delivered.

A while back, I also had a custom bow tie and suspenders made for Stavros. My intentions were to use them for his professional photos, but he never wore them. Therefore, I thought today’s staged photo session with mommy was a perfect occasion for Stav to wear them! I think the photos turned out absolutely adorable and I’m thankful for this beautiful, sunny day!

Easter Celebration 2013

Posted by The Jarjoura Family on March 24, 2013
Posted in: China Experiences, Holidays, Stavros. Tagged: bunny costume, Easter, egg hunt, sack race, Shanghai. 1 comment

We had our annual Easter celebration today! It was a lot smaller than the 150 guests we had last year, but everything about it was absolutely wonderful! I spent the past few weeks planning the celebration and was able to carry out all the details I hoped to do!

I went with a burlap and lace theme, which provided and beautiful, shabby chic feel to the party! I used the burlap in several ways: tablescape, backdrop, banners, egg decorating, in picture frames and I even wrapped a large canvas in burlap to make an Easter wall hanging! Along with the burlap there was, of course, a lot of lace. I wanted to add some color and sophistication to the theme, so I turned to Chickabug for some custom printables in a lovely quatrefoil (my favorite print)! For decor, I also added a hanging parasol, pom poms, tissue poms, paper doilies, hand drawn and cut Easter silhouettes, two gorgeous flower arrangements and an abundance of egg cups and candle sticks.

I made t-shirts for the kids to wear to the celebration! The shirts turned out better than I expected and looked fantastic! Each shirt was customized with the kids’ names on the back! Adorable! I loved this detail and I think I will be using it again in the future!

To get the party started, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch delivered by Fields. Following lunch was the most exciting part of the party for the kids… A rented white, fluffy bunny for the kids to love on and feed! The bunny was the star of the party and certainly left in a carrot coma from all the carrots he inhaled! We also had another visitor! The Easter bunny (aka Tammer) made sure to stop by to say hello to everyone! The kids loved seeing him and I am so glad Tammer was such a good sport about wearing the costume! The costume was custom-made by a local company and fit Tammer perfectly! It arrived only two days ago, so I was grateful this detail actually happened!

Next, we all went outside for the egg hunt! It always amazes me how quickly an egg hunt is over–start to finish, the hunt lasted about ten minutes! I wanted to add a bit of an Asian touch to the party, being that we love in China, so I ordered Asian parasols for the kids! I thought the parasols were absolutely adorable, but the kids didn’t seem as into them as I was. Oh well, I liked them! I convinced the kids to take a few photos with the parasols and they conjured up some smiles! Following the parasol excitement, we headed to the underground garage for a bunny hop sack race! The sack race was also one of those things that is over before you know it! I loved the sack race though because I added handles, name tags and large bunny tails to the burlap sacks for the race! These details made the race even more exciting! The kids looked adorable in their sacks with their bunny masks on! Too cute!

After the race, we headed back upstairs to enjoy some cake, conversation, guitar-playing by Stavros and a playroom filled with toys! Last, the kids gathered up all of their goodies to take home and we called it a night! Wow, I was exhausted!!!

Such a fantastic day! Thank you to all of our guests for helping us make memories for our son! Thank you to Chickabug for you beautiful Printables! I wouldn’t change a thing about the day and I’m already making plans for next year’s Easter celebration!

Heping Park

Posted by The Jarjoura Family on March 10, 2013
Posted in: China Experiences. 1 comment

Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful, 81° day. We wanted to take advantage of the weather, so we planned a family day at the nearby by Heping Park. The park is quite large with boat rental, a zoo, a small amusement park and a large bounce house area.

First on our agenda was a boat ride around the park. Stavros did the steering and even controlled the throttle most of the time. We laughed at the other boat drivers–our three-year old seemed to have a better grasp of the concept than most! We really had a fantastic time and it was so nice doing something outside! We figured when we left Brazil we would always miss the year-round sunny weather and we definitely do… Shanghai weather is certainly better than weather at home in Detroit though, so we can’t complain!

After our boat ride, we headed over to the zoo. We fed the ostrich, goats and deer, then took our time staring at the lazy bears and leopards. The zoo in the park is small, but perfect for a little something extra to go along with the day in the park! After seeing the animals, Stavros grabbed an ice cream and chose a handmade lollipop for the ride home. One good thing about the park is it’s less than a ten minute drive for us, so we can go anytime we like now that the weather has changed.
